Rural Tourism

rural tourism

There are around 1400 rural communities across the South East, varying from small villages to larger market towns. Given the nature of the region and also the general decline in the importance of agriculture to the regional economy, tourism presents a significant economic driver to the rural economy. In fact rural tourism:

  • Contributes £2.3 billion per annum
  • 4 million staying visitors, 3.3 million day visits
  • Supports 40 – 50,000 jobs
  • 130 million local day trips contributing £2.2 billion pa
  • Total Contribution: £4.5 billion

Life in rural areas is changing and tourism presents a masssive potential to be a catalyst for new ideas, opportunites and directions. In response to this challenge SERCC has developed and manages the Hidden Britain South East Project in partnership with Tourism South East and Natural Discovery. The project itself is funded by SEEDA through the Rural Development Programme for England.

Hidden Britain South East is an initiative with the twin aims of encouraging tourists to go off the beaten path, exploring the more secluded areas of our countryside, and ensuring rural communities get the best return from this tourism by giving the decision-making power to the community as a whole.
hidden britain seHidden Britain provides the guidance, advice, support and experience to help realise the vision of the people who know the area best, and because of this, can be as flexible as necessary, providing exactly what is needed in any area at any time.

The project commenced in September 2004. As a consequence of the project twenty five destinations so far have been developed and supported through the process. Case Studies of just some of those are provided below.
